The Basenji is extremely intelligent, active and responds well to training from an early age. It is probably not the best choice if you have young kids, but it gets along well with older children. The Basenji has a strong urge to please so it is a great companion. It makes you feel loved and important and it becomes part of the family very fast.

The Basenji can be reserved with strangers, but can also form strong bonds with people. It likes to climb and can easily get over wire fences. It tends to chew a lot and requires a lot of exercise. It has the unique properties of not barking and of cleaning itself like a cat, so don't chose this breed if you are looking for a watchdog. Basenjis can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play.
