Dog breeds good for children above the age of 10

  • Great Dane

  • Border Collie

    Border Collie

Border Collies are extremely intelligent and very lively dogs. They excel in agility skills, obedience, frisbee and sheepdog trials. To a Border Collie, a child is sheep without wool, so it will try to herd the child every time it ‘escapes from the fold’. This is why border collies are only recommended to families with children above the age of 10, who are capabale of dealing with such situations. Beside their strong herding instincts, Border Collies make great family pets and get on with children very well.

  • Basset Hound

    Basset Hound

Basset Hounds are very even tempered, calm and love children. However, as younger kids might try to ride the dog, which can seriously damage its long back, this breed is only recommended for older children, who understand that a Basset Hound is not a toy to ride.

  • Bernese Mountain Dog

    Bernese Mountain Dog

Berners are very gentle and caring with children, provided that the child is old enough to treat them the same way. Bernese Mountain Dogs may inadvertently knock over a child due to their massive size, but they will be perfect mates for children above the age of 10.

  • Dalmatian

    Great Dane

Great Danes are often described as naturally protective, tender and tolerant with children. At the same time, this breed is one of the largest of all breeds, which means that they sometimes accidentally knock children over or slap them with their long and happy tails. They are a perfect match for older children.
